Tree, Golf, Friends, and Football

Kate and Jay were here for the weekend, so after breakfast Saturday and a phone call to the birthday girl, we headed to the Christmas Tree Farm to pick out this year's best tree ever. Kate and I decorated the tree and the front porch while E.W. and Jay took charge of the meat portion of the tailgate menu: ribs, loin, and wings. Between football games, there was a four-hole golf outing, with Miss Scarlett and me as the gallery. Yes, that crazy cat walked all four holes with us. Upon returning to the house, we lit a fire in the fireplace, set out the tailgate fare, and welcomed friends over to watch THE game, UGA vs Tech. A win for the dawgs was perfect ending to a wonderful day.

Yeah, this one's only ten feet tall.

Kate checks it out; Jay's not sure.

Definitely way too small.

This is better.

He's still got it.

Jay steps up.

Bridgett and Fischer are looking for a tree, too.

Fischer has such smooshable cheeks.

Kate pretends to help Jay in the kitchen.

Yes, he know's what he's doing.

While the smoker's on,
there's time for a four-hole tournament.

Kate contemplates her shot.

Miss Scarlett decides to walk with the group.

E.W. attempts his putt.

Miss Scarlett walked all four holes. Crazy cat.

Flashback Friday: Evidence of My Mama's Talent

Some time in the middle of the last century, my grandmother got yards of an eyelet fabric from an estate sale. She gave it to her daughter-in-law, my mama, to make a dress for me. The original version of the dress is at the top right. We were living at Ft. Clayton at the time; I was six or seven when that picture was made. For the unobservant, please note I was sporting a Pixie (who knew I'd be such a trendsetter) and under that dress was a crinoline. The next year, I'd grown and the dress was too tight. No problem for my talented mama; she just removed the puffy sleeves and added spaghetti straps so I could get another year's wear out of it. I guess my hair had grown out and the crinoline had lost some of its poof!

Flash forward to the early eighties; it was time to baptize Kate and Mama had a great idea. She reworked the dress once again, this time into a baptismal gown for my daughter. Have you ever seen anything so lovely and sentimental? For now, the gown is carefully stored, just waiting to see what's in store for it next...

Brother & Sister

This is one of my all-time favorite Thanksgiving Day pictures. It was taken in the swing that hung from the rafters over the back deck at my parent's home.

Worth's slicked-down hair, the expression on Kate's face, and the all-around sweetness of a brother smoochin' on his was a lot to be thankful for in 1985...and it still is!

I'm Married to a Celebrity

E.W.'s birthday festivities began earlier in the week and continued through the big win Saturday night (How 'bout them dawgs!!!!!!). In between, there was scads of tailgating fun with our family and friends. Ellie quite enjoyed her second tailgate and was a trouper; she lasted eight hours with just one short nap and no meltdowns! Kate's friend Jennifer brought along some of her friends and one of them brought a friend...turned out to be a son of E.W.'s college roommate; we had not seen this child since he was a toddler (he's now 27!). That was our small world moment of the day. Then, to top off the night, E.W. was on ESPN (scroll way down for the evidence!), resulting in an avalanche of calls, texts, voicemails, facebook shoutouts and emails! Too bad the network didn't know it was his birthday (but he's proud he wasn't doing anything embarrassing!).
