Rolling, rolling, rolling

Miss Scarlett was giddy during this part of the construction; usually she has to travel a little further to do her rolling in the sand!

While we were at it...

So.

On the other side of the breezeway, we had this perfectly lovely but completely useless area. While we were getting the walkway done, it just made sense to go ahead and add outdoor living space here.

pretty, but useless

Here's how that area looked during construction:

footings

brick edging

sanded, awaiting gutter rerouting, concrete, and steps

Now that it's (finally, thanks to the record rainfall) finished, there's landscaping to be done and we are really excited to figure out the best way to use this space, now known as The Terrace. It's right off the kitchen, so do we want a table with chairs? A grouping of adirondack chairs for lazy conversation? Our access to the original patio is improved and yes, there is still room in the yard for the tailgate tent. In the meantime, we'll enjoy the new view and a cold beverage from our old chairs and look forward to the many 'festivals' that we have planned.

Walk This Way

Every time it rains, the walkway leading to our side door turns into a pond. This is the way everyone enters our home, so you can see it's a problem. Adding stepping stones didn't help; the water rose above them. Even without rain, it just wasn't functional.

the pond

We (finally) said enough is enough and contracted for a walkway that would both function well and look nice (anything would be better than asphalt!). This is how it looked during construction...

footings
brick edging

sand (Scarlett's favorite part)

...and this is how it looks now.  Finally, as Worth said, people won't need their waders to get in the house when it's raining! I'm looking forward to working on the landscaping; already have the plans, just need to get 'er done.

ready for landscaping!
Of course, we couldn't stop with just a walkway; see what else we did!

Lately

I think these girls adore having a baby brother.

The rest of us are pretty happy about it, too. I love having snuggle time with Mack!

A Few Favorites

These are few of my favorites from August 21st and 22nd (some are mine, some are Kate's, and a few were liberated from Worth and Ashley's camera).

Mack is about thirty minutes old here:

Sweet mama. Sweet baby.

E.W. is the first grandparent to meet Mack.

Between thinking about Ashley being in labor and then getting word that Mack had been born, Serita and I didn't sleep much. We still managed to get the girls up and ready to meet their baby brother before school. Didn't take them long to become enchanted.

first kisses

Ellie's face says it all.

"He has eyes, just like the rest of us!"

Serita showing Emma how to "pet" Mack.

Looking an awful lot like his daddy did.

So tickled!

We took the girls on to school and Serita went home to work for a bit before coming back with Chappie. While we were gone, Ashley took this picture; isn't it great? Probably our favorite (so far) of our son and his son.

Proud daddy

In the meantime, Auntie Kate arrived. We took Ellie to her church activity and headed, Emma in tow, to Target to buy some boy stuff! Kate and I didn't want Mack to have to wear pink and purple. :) We also got some art supplies for a welcome home poster! From there it was back to the church to pick Ellie up and head to the hospital to see Mack.

Party of Five

Auntie Kate is smitten. Ellie is, too.

Emma isn't too sure about what is going on,
but since we are all excited, she is, too.

Mack isn't too sure about this whole
outside-the-womb thing.

The next morning, it was time for Ashley and Mack to head home.

Happy, happy (well, except for Mack).

These toes deserve their own close-up.

All in all, an amazing couple of days with a lot of sweet memories. For more see Kate's version of events and, of course, Mack's family blog here, here, and here.

More Similarities?

It's always fun to see the similarities through the generations. A few days ago, I backtracked on Bo a little bit. Now that Mack has arrived, he reminds me of another baby I've seen before.

Happy Birthday, Mack!

Henry Hammack Bowers (Mack)
20 inches long - 7 lbs 2 oz. - 2:57 a.m. - 8/21/13

We are, of course, beyond thrilled to welcome him to our family, and ever so grateful that he's healthy.

The grandmothers managed to get Ellie and Emma up
and dressed to go meet their baby brother.

almost there

Mack will be tough. His sisters could not keep their hands off of him!

love
E.W. has already given him a football. Hope that cancels out all of the times his sisters will have him dressed up as a prince (Ellie has already planned this).

Unanswered Question (at least for now!)

Not since we were having children ourselves (back in the dark ages) have we anxiously awaited the birth of a baby not knowing the gender. It's so exciting and it won't be long (due date is tomorrow) until we know how this plays out for Ellie and Emma! E.W. thinks they'll have a little brother; I'm in the little sister camp (and yes, the entire family has taken sides and wagered on date, gender, and weight!).
