Perfect Sacrifice

It was a perfect sacrifice
by a perfect person
to perfect some very imperfect people.
Hebrews 10:14

Easter brings me to my knees; this verse from The Message explains why.

This Face

Too much time has gone by without us seeing this face but it won't be long now!

Zone One

It's sad that so much hard work just does not come across in pictures! I've been working on this space, zone one :), off and on for several weeks, with a short break for this. There's more to do, but for now, it's good enough!

Scraggly, misplaced shrubs - embarrassing!

Old azaleas have LOTS of deep roots...

...but we prevailed.

Unfortunately, there was a stump. Not any more!

The sand arrives...

...and took WAY more time than I'd estimated.

Pine straw in progress.

Getting close.

Utility boxes painted, bird bath painted...done for now!

My Hero!

It started out huge but I managed to make a dent. My hero, however, made it GONE!

The Difference A Year Can Make

One year ago today this face changed my heart. Since then, we've been exchanging letters and getting to know each other. The blessings have been many, not the least of them is that I'm honored that a little girl in El Salvador is praying for me.

Later that day...

The sand pile started out like this so you can see it's definitely smaller now (about eight hours of shoveling smaller). There's still a lot of sand in the driveway but we WILL make it go away! In the meantime, Miss Scarlett and Putter are enjoying one of their favorite pastimes: rolling in the dirt. I blame failure to capture that photo op on bulky gloves, a shovel, and the wheelbarrow.

Zone Two

This has always been one of the most neglected areas in our yard. Oh, we've tried a number of ideas through the years (notice the ugly stepping stones leading to a door we never use) but nothing has ever looked right. With all of the other improvements we've tackled, it just seemed time to try again in what I call, with affection(ha), zone two (zone one is a much larger project and is still in progress...).

So far, I've scrubbed the brick, replaced the tree ivy with a gardenia, and added ferns against the house in an always-shady spot. Pots filled with begonias line the steps (something else I could paint!). E.W. planted some mountain laurels in places that have been bare for way too long. The bed edging has been restored to its proper configuration (grass will have to grow in some spots!) and bales upon bales of pine straw have been put down. It's looking so much better!

Summers Boys, Spring Break Edition

Tyson and Jake stopped by the office Thursday...Jake scored BIG when his daddy gave him a cup of ice and Coach gave him powdered doughnuts!

Jake, livin' large and lovin' spring break!

Before and After: Heirloom Concrete

Not long after we bought our lot, we were fortunate to be given a bench and table that were in Momee's (E.W.'s maternal grandmother) yard. These two items were put in our yard here long before the foundation was laid for our home. All during the building process we rested weary bodies on the bench and placed cool drinks on the table. Although we like the 'loved and well-used' appearance of things, these pieces had gone beyond shabby chic! A coat of paint and some new plantings go a long way, don't you agree?

The Patio Springs Forward

Looks inviting from a distance.

On closer inspection, a good scrubbing was needed.

Winter crud, begone!

Now for a little furniture refreshing.

My weapon of choice.

Getting this table apart
was a whole lot harder than putting it together.

Clean and ready for spring!

We Fought the Yard and the Yard Won

After a week of rain and dark clouds and did I mention...rain, today was mostly sunny so we took advantage of the weather and did some much needed landscaping. Landscaping...such a soothing word for something that is SO back-breaking!

If only it could all be done in one day...

Saturday Night

There were a lot of pictures taken at Tyler and Jenna Claire's reception (so fun!) Saturday night...this is one of my favorites.

New Season, New Flag

Kate seems to regret her missed chance in the flag corps.
E.W. and Jay discuss the logistics...
While Kate and I perch on Momee's bench and observe.
